Women in the Mediterranean Conference

Sunday, 27 April at 4 PM
Mediterranean Conference Centre
Valletta
, Malta

Inspired by Pope Francis’ teachings on the Mediterranean as a bridge between peoples, cultures, and religions, and at a time when society is still shaken by domestic violence and femicide, the Church in Malta is hosting a conference on women’s dignity and self-determination.
Inizjamed is collaborating with the Archdiocese by presenting poetry written by contemporary Maltese women during the conference.
Elizabeth Grech from Mana Chuma Teatro,  is participating through her works together with Clare Azzopardi, Miriam Calleja, Elena Cardona, Leanne Ellul, Simone Galea, Claudia Gauci, Maria Grech Ganado, Simone Inguanez, Nadja Mifsud and Klara Vassallo

This conference is part of a broader MED25 – Bel Espoir, a collaborative initiative involving several Mediterranean countries.
The event will serve as a platform to explore narratives of womanhood in the Mediterranean through three key themes:

  • Abduction (Il-Ħatfa)– Examining women’s experiences shaped by both care and conflict, particularly in the context of migration.
  • Outward vs. Inward (Barra u Ġewwa)– Reflecting on identity, belonging, and the challenges faced within a patriarchal society.
  • Silence and Being Silenced (Omertà)– Discussing the power of women’s voices and how silence can serve as both dignity and oppression.

The conference will feature keynote speakers, an interactive panel discussion, and networking opportunities.
