On 28 November, at the Teatro San Bruno in Reggio Calabria, a theatrical performance took place, promoted by the External Penal Execution Office of Reggio Calabria (UEPE) of the Ministry of Justice and staged by Mana Chuma Teatro.
The set design was created by students from the Academy of Fine Arts of Reggio Calabria.
The performance “Viaggio” was the culmination of three months of workshops, during which participants collaboratively developed their stage presence, the narrative, and the visual elements of the production. The story portrayed a journey among unfamiliar faces, towards the seashore: a metaphor for an inner voyage, a reflection on one’s human condition, and a search for reconciliation after conflict, repair after mistakes, and the possibility of self-improvement.
For Mana Chuma Teatro, the workshops and performance in contexts of penal supervision are far more than an artistic project: theatre becomes an act of humanity, a form of prevention and social reintegration, and, at the same time, a liberating form of expression. Through the performance, each participant has the opportunity to tell their own story and connect with others, opening spaces for freedom and dialogue that are often absent elsewhere.
The performance featured participants on probation under social services, protagonists of the “Ultimo Atto” project, which included a theatrical workshop encompassing the development and staging of the production. It was an intense and moving experience, giving voice to stories in transformation and fostering new forms of awareness.
